Job Description:

POSITION TITLE: Project Engineer (internal candidates only at this time)

LOCATION: Flexible/Virtual Home office position (preference to near one of our offices: Atlanta, GA; Tampa, FL; Brentwood, TN; Reading, PA)

POSITION SUMMARY: A thorough knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering fields, as related to material handling systems, equipment, processes, and facilities, will be used to lead multiple project delivery efforts and team management for Fortna’s Clients.  Will be responsible to plan and conduct independent work which will require judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.  Devise new approaches to problems and prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations, charts, and graphs, and monitor work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices. 


  • Serving as the single point of contact for projects within the Engineering group.  Leading several engineering work streams throughout the entire lifecycle of a project. Typical phases of projects will include solutions development, RFP engineering and detailed engineering.  Additionally, providing coordination support of installation contractors, Program Managers, Project Managers, and Site Managers with installation efforts
  • Leading Fortna design team
    • Facilitating Engineering group meetings as required by project cadence

      • Producing meeting agendas

      • Providing meeting minutes to team members

    • Updating Project Management team on the current status of Engineering group

      • Compiling overall Engineering group status reports

      • Representing Engineering group at project update meetings

    • Maintaining and tracking Engineering group schedules

      • ensuring all interdepartmental deliverables are provided

      • providing resource requirements to resource planners

    • Maintaining and tracking Engineering group budgets, providing Project Management and Engineering management team with insight to past and visibility of possible budget variances

    • Providing overall Quality Control (QC) check for Engineering group

    • Attend Client meetings as required

    • Development of lessons learned document

    • Holding Engineering work stream leads accountable for deliverables

  • Interfacing with Solutions Development group, Supply Chain Services, and/or the Project/Program Managers depending on the current phase of the project
  • Interfacing with Software Engineering to assure designs are viewed from a holistic point of view
  • Conducting site visits to determine and validate field dimensions
  • Following and providing input for improvement of Drawing Quality Control (DQC) process 


  • Leading generation and enhancement of department standard documentation and procedures to improve the quality and efficiency of the Engineering Group
  • Constantly working to expand own and other’s knowledge of industry best practices and latest technology
  • Utilizing AutoCAD, Promis-e and/or DCDesigner for sketching and/or drawings when applicable
  • Continuously working to solve Client needs
  • Proactively seeking work for self and others to maintain project utilization
  • Using current design practices for material handling systems
  • Maintaining good design notes
  • Attending and/or performing company training as required
  • Being reliable: providing timely responses and consistent follow-up



Experience and Skills:


  • 4 year engineering degree from an accredited college with 10 years of relevant experience
  • Overall domain knowledge within the Design Engineering group
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with and manage multiple suppliers
  • Ability to work effectively on a team and support high levels of performance
  • Strong management and advanced collaboration and communication skills (written and verbal communication)
  • Extensive experience working with MS Project and MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to coach/lead and manage others.  Must be able to manage remote resources through the use of conference calls, webcasts or webinars, video conferencing, or other forms of digital communication.  Must be able to manage resources in multiple time zones.
  • Must have experience in standard design of relevant material handling equipment for position

  • Ability to travel primarily domestically and as needed internationally

  • Travel - approx. 25 - 30% travel 


  • 4 year engineering degree from an accredited college
  • 7 years consulting, operations and/or distribution experience in supply chain logistics
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD 3D
  • 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Project management experience
